If you don’t ski, a trip to the top of the mountain is well worth the effort, summer or winter. Lone Mountain (11,150 feet) towers over the surrounding mountains with 360° views of the surrounding Gallatin Range, the neighboring Absarokas and Madison Ranges, Yellowstone National Park, the Bozeman Valley, and, on a very clear day, the towering Teton Mountain Range in far off Jackson Hole. If you are a first-time skier or snowboarder, Big Sky offers plenty of opportunity with a ski school eager to teach all levels and abilities. If you’re interested in cross-country skiing, be sure to visit Lone Mountain Ranch which grooms over 65 kilometers of trails.
Staying Indoors
The non-outdoor types can get a massage, relax in the Huntley Lodge pool, workout in the Hunley fitness center or go shopping during either season. Big Sky has all the amenities of a small town with big city ideals. There are over 25 restaurants and eateries to satiate the hunger and thirst created after a long hike, and over 40 shops that provide everything from groceries to gifts to gear. Big Sky also has a nice selection of spas ready to cater to your every whim when you feel the need to pamper yourself.
Summer
There are so many things to do in the Big Sky area that you'll have to spend at least a week with us! Enjoy a Scenic Lift Ride, Hiking, Horseback Riding, or Mountain Biking in the mountains. Or, take to the rivers with Fly Fishing or Whitewater Rafting. And, Yellowstone is just a quick drive down the road.
Because Big Sky is in close proximity to Yellowstone National Park, a lot of the terrain is similar, making for great summertime hiking, camping, and biking. Expert guides are always ready to be of service, although most of the trails are publicly accessible and easy to enjoy on your own.
Fly Fishing
Some of the best fly fishing in Montana can be done in and around Big Sky! Find yourself on the Gallatin River, Missouri, and Yellowstone Rivers. There are a wide variety of fishing expedition companies available for fishing ALL YEAR long - even in the winter months!
Mountain Biking
Explore the town of Big Sky and surrounding parks and trails by bike. There are many options to rent bikes to just cruise around town as well as to explore beginner to advanced mountain bike trails. Biking around Big Sky is a great way to orient yourself with the area and to explore some of the many trails.
White Water Rafting
A variety of white water rafting is available for all levels on the Yellowstone and Gallatin Rivers. Some are perfect for families and first time rafters; others are better for thrill seekers (Class I-IV+ rapids available - water level permitting).
Horseback Riding
Whether you are an experienced equestrian or have never set foot near a horse, horseback riding is the perfect way to access trails and remote wilderness areas from Alpenglow. Get away from the crowds and explore Big Sky's backcountry and beautiful surroundings on horseback. Some horseback riding guides offer one-hour to all day tours as well as multi-day trips, sometimes in combination with fishing or hiking.
